After lessons on Thursday, I had to decide how to thank my teachers. Being a teacher myself, I know how rewarding it is to receive such a small thank you gift. Teaching is often said to be a career choice. It is something someone one chooses to do, not for financial reasons, but for the imparting of knowledge.
Whilst I totally agree with the later, it is also important, in my view, to recognize those who work tirelessly to educate others. Hence I decided to give a small thank you gift to each of my teachers.
Thursday evening was an interesting. I finally got to have a drink with a good friend at The Grand Hotel. Located near an MRT stop on the Danshui line, it was a short walk up the hill to the hotel. The location and view is spectacular. 101 glistens in the evening and you get a birds eye view of Taipei.
The hotel is very classical Chinese architecture reminiscent of structures such as Beijing's Imperial Palace with strong use of the color red and thick pillars inside. We wandered up to the second floor and seeing the old black and white pictures of past famous people who have stayed at the hotel gave a feeling of time stood still. In fact this hotel oozes of such sentiments. Personally it would not be a place I would choose to stay at. It is rather old and a little run down looking but it has that ambience of a past glory that has since somewhat faded. It reminded me of the time I stayed at the Peace Hotel in Shanghai before the closure and long renovation by Fairmont Hotels.
Still it is worth a visit and a drink in the main lobby. I loved the pianist and the violinist. It really added to the ambience of the place. A must see spot in Taipei.
